Gamines are famous for their ability to rock a pixie cut - so much so that it's become almost a rite of passage for them, upon finding their type, to get the Gamine Chop. It works for both Flamboyant and Soft, and the before-and-afters are stunning. Their faces just come alive.
However...what if you don't want to cut your hair? Or don't want to yet? Let's explore some alternatives.
First up is my favorite Gamine, supermodel Twiggy! I love this lady. She stayed humble no matter how famous she got, and thereby managed to steer clear of the more damaging side of the industry. I think she was told in school that she wasn't very bright, so unlike most super-famous people, she was always careful not to make any big mistakes that might embarrass her. And she didn't! She was married to her first husband until he died, is still married to her second one, and retired with millions to work on cool projects that she enjoys while supporting her favorite charitable causes. Fantastic life, really.
In her case, the Gamine Chop is what made her a supermodel. She went in for something different but was too polite to correct the hairdresser. What a happy accident, right?
However, it's not the only style that works for her. This long braid is also great. It's pretty much the same look as above - in fact it might literally the same haircut, except with the braid attached - and because it's pulled away from her face and neck, it's still Gamine-flattering.
So if you're not ready for The Chop, what if you found ways to keep it swept up like this? You would certainly be very on-trend, my high school students are all wearing it this way right now.
Back to Twiggy - what doesn't work is long hair that flows down around her face, like she's wearing here. It's just too dull for her. She's still a beautiful lady but you don't see the sparkle she has above.
Let's review another one: Audrey Hepburn, quintessential Gamine goddess. Definitely gorgeous in a pixie...
...But also in a high ponytail...
...or even in super-long hair, as long as it's swept up and away. In fact it's kind of like a cool accessory here.
But down around her face, which for some folks would be a much better look, it's just too drab for her.
Which begs the question. Beautiful Miranda Otto, who played Eowyn in Lord of the Rings...what magical fairy lady is hiding under all that hair?
